St. Andrew's School Gym, May 31, 2003 -- BATCH ’91 steps up its game to dump crap into Batch ’85.

BATCH ’91 stepped up its campaign by destroying batch ’85, 84-64, Saturday in the 2003 Inter Batch Basketball Tournament at the SAS Coliseum.

In a game that was expected to be a litmus test for Batch ‘91’s team strength turned out to be a walk in the park for the SAS high school graduates 12 years ago.

Team Batch 1991 after beating Batch 1985 to the score of 84-64

Gilbert “The Sergeant” Altraca played his first game and gave Batch ’91 additional heft and toughness inside.

The vaunted big men of batch ’85 were completely dominated by the more powerful and agile Batch ’91 big men Mike “Superman” Mendoza, The Sergeant and Vincent “Nowitzki” Tabing. Superman, The Sergeant and Nowitzki led a balanced Batch ‘91 offense and defense to make sure the lead won’t fall below 15 points. The big three also applied the cuffs on Batch ’85 big men making them impotent both on offense and defense.

The backcourt of batch ’85 were never able to match the speed and finesse of Batch ’91 backcourt sentinels Vincent “The Rifleman” Samoy, Roel “Parating Kargado” Rianzares, Francis “Star” Estrella, Edgardo “The Don” Sta. Agueda and Arnold “James Worthy” Escanilla. Batch ’85 never knew what hit them when Batch ’91 bombarded them with precision fast break plays. The Rifleman kept Batch ‘85’s defense from sagging inside by hitting 4 three point buckets, three of them in the second half.

The game was momentarily interrupted when The Sergeant and Batch ’85 center Alex Diamitas was slapped with double technical fouls. In what appeared to be an apparent attempt to show The Sergeant who is boss, Diamitas gave The Sergeant a sharp elbow to the face while the two were positioning inside the paint. Not one to let someone show him who is more man, The Sergeant retaliated and gave Diamitas back the favor.

Crowd favorite Gado showed that he had a lot of heart when he played injured. It appeared that Gado sprained a ligament in the medial side of his “dirty” finger. This made Gado’s shots off-line. As a result, he was 0 of 20 from the field. Just the same, he had several “kalawit” rebounds on top of a behind-the-back ala-Magic Johnson pass to Rani Magayanes to jump start a fabulous fast break. Too bad he did not lost his shoe this time.

Batch ’91 is now 2-0 to lead Group A. Next game will be on Sunday, June 8, 3:30PM at the SAS Coliseum versus Batch ‘83.
