St. Andrew's School Gym, July 13, 2003 --
In this semi-final knock-out game, the people in the SAS gym could
sense the
desire of the Jakolites of Batch 91 to enter the finals of the 1st
SAS Inter-Batch Basketball Tournament.
Coming into the game with one thing in mind…to brush aside the only
obstacle that stands between them and the finals, the Jakolites banked on
defensive hassles and
offensive teamwork to dump batch 90, 79-65.
Batch 90 never had the lead again after going up, 2-0 first30 seconds
of the game.
Mike “Black Superman” Mendoza, again, had another fine and steady game.
Providing
the Jakolites the points (inside and outside) and rebounds necessary
put batch 90 in a
safe distance, Black Superman stood tall against the batch 90 big men.
Forward Vince “Nowitzki” Tabing carried the Jakolites in the first half
with booming three-
point baskets, blocks and rebounds. He also helped neutralize batch
90’s human tower,
the 6’ 5” Raymond Layness.
Francis Estrella, Ronald Pangan and Noel Son rotated in defending batch
90 top gun
Tupe Villamayor.
The fist half finished with the Jakolites ahead by 10 points.
In the middle of the third quarter, batch 90 was able to get a momentum
and cut the
Jakolites’ lead to 6 points. During this stretch, Raymond Layness got
some clear baskets
inside and Villamayor was able to snatch several three-point plays.
But the unrelenting Jakolites regrouped to finally put a stop to batch
90’s rally. Steady
guards Vince Samoy, Francis Estrella, Rani Magayanes, Leo Oaper and
Don Sta.Agueda worked together to fuel the Jakolite running offense.
Together with the Black Superman and Nowitzki, the Jakolites pulled ahead
comfortably for good in the fourth quarter.
In the other semi final game, batch 85 beat batch 87 to snare the other
slot in the finals.
With this, the finals will be a best-of-three match between batch 85
and Batch 91. Game
one will be on Sunday, July 20, 6:00PM at the SAS Gym.
