St. Andrew's School Gym, June 08, 2003 --
Batch ’91 survived a furious late game rally of batch ’83 to carve out
an ugly but convincing win, 74-62.
Batches ‘91 built a comfortable lead at the start of the second half
using its good running (but in need of further fine tuning) fast break
attacks. Guards Vince Samoy, Don Sta. Agueda, Francis Estrella and Rani
Magayanes took their turns in the breaks to build several 18-point
leads
in the third quarter.
The game saw Jason Minoza, Arnold Enciso and Noel Ison playing their
first game for Batch ’91.
Michael ‘Slow Mo Superman’ Mendoza played his usual game by scoring
inside the paint against batch ’83 big men and getting offensive and
defensive rebounds. Slow Mo Superman teamed up with Jason Minoza to
corner the rebounds needed to jump-start the Batch ’91 fast breaks.
Ronald Pangan, who had his hair colored light brown, sank 3-point
baskets in the last 2 minutes to ward off batch '83s rally late in the game.
During the first half, dependable guards Sandy Kalugdan and Arnold
‘James Worthy’ Escanilla contributed their share in offense and defense
to maintain Batch ’91 leads. Jojo Austria, Arnold Enciso & Noel Ison
made valuable contribution on both ends of the floor. Without the help
from the bench of Batch ’91 in both offense and defense, the referees
would have succeeded in helping batch ’83 win.
Team stalwart and crowd favorite Gado ‘The Fresh Prince’ Salvador
played like an ordinary mortal for the second game in a row. The injury
to
his ‘dirty’ finger was still bothering him as he shot 0 out of 36 from
the field. During the first half, The Fresh Prince tried to make some
nifty move to impress the paying crowd. In one play, he made a stutter
stepping ala-Elvis Presley-You-Ain’t-Nothin’-But-A-Hound-Dog-leg-dance
fake move which only faked…himself. The Fresh Price almost tore the
soles of one of his shoe off during the warm-ups. It seemed the Fresh
Prince has a lot of things in his mind. During the warm-ups, the Fresh
Prince was noticed to be "lumalande". Unfortuntely, it wasn't determined if
the object of his "kalandian" was a female or a male.
The win was the third straight for the Batch ‘91, who will try to
clinch at least a tie for a semifinal slot with a win on Friday, 13
June,
against Batch ‘92.
Special mention to Emil Cruz, Manollete Hidalgo, Peter de Leon, Arnold
Padiernos, Lechler Valenzuela, Paul Ramirez and Bernard Ramos. They
went to the game to provide support to the Batch '91 team. (Pasensya na
kung may nakalimutan).
